Dream Girls at Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Theatre

Why see Dream Girls?

Dream Girls is on tour and hits the in , ,

The triumph and torment of show business is examined in this musical about a Supremes-like female singing group that fights its way to the top, losing its moral bearings in the process, then finding them again. Score includes "Steppin' to the Bad Side" "Cadillac Car" and "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going."

When Dreamgirls first opened on Broadway in 1981, it racked up the awards and garnered the acclaim that made it the classic favorite we know and love today. Full of onstage joy and backstage drama, Dreamgirls tells the story of an up-and-coming, 1960s girl singing group and the triumphs and tribulations that come with fame and fortune.

Hopeful talents Deena Jones, Lorrell Robinson and Effie White are performing as “The Dreamettes” when ambitious agent Curtis Taylor, Jr. discovers them.

He lands them a job as backup singers for the soul and rock ‘n’ roll sensation James “Thunder” Early and begins to guide their quickly rising career. However, when the beautiful Deena emerges as the star of the group rather than the full-voiced Effie, the girls are brought to personal and professional crossroads.

With its powerful score and thought-provoking story, Dreamgirls has touched audiences from 1980s Broadway to 21st century Hollywood, introducing some legendary breakthrough performances along the way. Newcomer Moya Angela will assume the legendary role of Effie played by Jennifer Holliday in the original production and Jennifer Hudson in the 2006 film adaptation. Syesha Mercado as Deena and Adrienne Warren as Lorrell, completing the trio, join Angela in heading an incredible cast of talented performers.

Dreamgirls returns to the stage in this brand-new production that promises to provide the show-stopping numbers and touching performances audiences have come to expect.
